The Environmental New Dawn Of Woodcraft

Woodcraft can be recognized as the art of  carving or fashioning from wood.

We also define it as the cleverness and knowledge in matters which relates to the woods, such as hunting, fishing, camping or very easily getting alive in the wild by staying a single step ahead of the puma. For thousands of years, people  have survived only thanks to their capacity to adapt and acquire their simple necessities from their surrounding accommodations, usually employing tiny far more technologies than their own hands

“It would support bring with each other young folks from numerous so-called stations, break down the barriers that society has foolishly placed upon them, and establish in their minds when they are young, a finer type of humanity, a true understanding that the essential point is the association of a human spirit.” – Ernest Thomson Seton. Ernest, an American naturalist and a proponent of these primitive capabilities, promoted the thought of a Woodcraft life-style from the early years of the 20th century. He believed that by continuing to practice these capabilities, even if for recreational or educational purposes, human beings will have a far better understanding of their planet and will be capable to reside much more harmoniously in it.

For this objective, in 1902, Ernest founded the ‘Order of Woodcraft Chivalry’ in an effort to reform delinquents who were damaging the land by intensive agriculture. Seton arranged camps for these folks, in which they have been taught Woodcraft, combining civilized values with the prodigious skills and sensible knowledge of Native American Indians. These camps educated them to interrelate with the land in a harmonious connection, preserving its sources and landscapes. His Book of Woodcraft (published in 1912) immediately became a greatest seller all more than the globe and had a key influence on parents who wished to teach their children ecologically sound and humanist principles. Ernest quickly had an international audience, with groups on equivalent lines founded in Britain and central Europe. Despite the fact that at their peak in 1920s, these groups rivaled the Boy Scouts, Woodcrafters dwindled for the duration of the Great Depression, the Second Planet War, and the subsequent suppression by the Nazis and the Communists. Ernest’s death in 1946 left these groups rudderless.

There are still a tiny number of groups active in North America and Britain, and a sizeable number in Czech Republic. However, most of Ernest’s legacy, i.e., commitment to seek information, pursue truth and beauty, increase tolerance and understanding, and to increase social and environmental situations by way of personal and collective action, remains forgotten and unexplored by current-day Pagans.

Question by winback: Can a mechanical engineer get a job in environmental engineering?
I am in mechanical engineering but I have a quite big interest in engineering associated to the atmosphere, regardless of whether it be energy, water therapy, etc.
I am also really interested in biomedical engineering (my college does not have this engineering specialty).

With a mechanical engineering degree, can a single get a job in the environmental and biomedical fields?

Sure. Many systems that deal with energy and/or water treatment are designed by mechanical engineers, Large scale civil structures are usually designed by civil engineers, but smaller scale piping systems used for demineralization, softening, site remediation skids, etc., use mechanical engineering.

As far as biomedical fields are concerned, I had a colleague with a mechanical engineering degree that went to work at a medical school doing research into blood flow. They were using fluid mechanics to model the circulatory system and needed a mechanical engineer for that. I have also seen MEs used in designing prosthetic devices for people missing limbs.

I am not saying these positions are common or easy to get, but there are opportunities if you wish to pursue them.

Yes, I agree with Oliver. I’m a Civil Engineer too, and we do practice environmental engineering. Water treatment and sewage treatment belongs to civil engineering jobs. We construct water treatment & sewage treament plants for that. Even prior constructing other projects, we consider first the impact of the project to the enviroment, human and animals and formulate mitigating measures to negate the negative impact. We have this Environmental Management Plan prepared before securing the Enviromental Clearance from concerned agency prior to starting the construction process.

Hazardous Waste Incineration plants, Waste and Water Treatment plants, Hazardous waste storage Facilities, Oil and Gas Processing plants, Environmental Air Quality Compliance with regard to plant stack emissions, are all projects that depend very heavily on mechanical equipment that must be designed and built specifically for each project and location.
Lots of work in this field for mechanical Engineers.
Get yourself hired by one of the major engineering contractors who engineer, design and construct these facilities.
